The People of London
London is a fast growing city with a population of over seven million people as of 2017. Life is as busy as you would expect it to be in New York City, with the exception of the occasional 4 p.m. tea and crumpet break. They have to deal with the terrible weather and awful traffic all the time, but they do have some edgy fashion to make up for it. The food has been said to be divine, especially when some people want to hop over to some, Cheeky Nando's, though it's not just meat that is popular. Vegetarian lifestyles are well accepted and embraced as well. London is a place where someone can go for the first time and feel like they've never left home. |
Beautiful and Breathtaking
Besides the amazing attractions like the London Eye, there are many other things that make the country so appealing. You can have the best of both worlds, even if you aren't Hannah Montana. There is the bucolic countryside only thirty minutes from the busy city. You can get your historical fix while driving around in one of the well known double decker buses. If you've seen V for Vendetta, the Guy Fawkes gun powder plot is just one example of the Hollywood appeal this city holds over us. Kings, castles, architecture, creepy lore, and who can forget the classic Big Ben, all things that are must see attractions on every tourist's bucket list. The cultural diversity is also very wide spread. My friend Neil said that he stayed for an entire week and didn't hear a single British accent because of how many different types of people there were roaming the streets. |
Challenges of The English People
There is a current housing crisis going on in the United Kingdom. Currently, people like artists and musicians who don't have steady work or permeant places to live, are flocking to England making the amount of homeless people soar. As seen in the picture to the left, different build materials are being used to construct a temporary home for the homeless. It was called "London's very own Frankenstein" by Smethers. Another current problem is the brexit situation. The SparkNotes version of brexit is that it is a fancy word for Britain's exit from the European Union. This is causing a lot of controversy with Britain and the Europeans. One last issue is social exclusion. It is currently extremely hard for women to get a job once they have been fired or quit form one. There are projects going on to send clothes to these underprivileged people and the program, "SmartWorks" has made a 59% increase in women getting at least an interview, according to Smethers. |
